MORE
We disguise more as something we are entitled to instead of something we selfishly desire.
We reframe MORE and we call it ENOUGH. WE say “I dont have enough”, or “Im just trying to make sure I have ENOUGH”, instead of just being honest and saying “I want MORE”.
The pursuit of more quietly pulls us away from stewarding what God has entrusted to us and leaves us overwhelmed trying to get more so we can fix what is broken in our lives.
Contentment with Godliness is the way out of pursuing MORE
1 Timothy 6:6-10
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs
Godliness WITH contentment is great gain
Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
We brought nothing in the world with us and we will take nothing out
Food and clothes are enough
Those who desire to be rich and those who love money will suffer
Those who desire riches.....
- will fall to temptation
- will fall into a snare
- Will be PLUNGED into ruin and destruction
- Will easily wander away from the faith.
- Are caused great pain and grief
God created us to be people who submit to Him, to trust Him, to be living sacrifices
Pursuing riches requires selfishness, Pursuing God requires complete surrender
1 Timothy 6:17-19
17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
Don't be arrogant
Don't put your hope in wealth, put your hope in God
(Philippians 4:19) my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus
Do good
Hebrews 13:16
16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
We lay up treasures for ourselves in heaven…by Giving away what you have been given.
We don't have to give everything away…but when we put our hope in God to give us all that we need we can help others in need without hesitation.
Contentment unlocks our ability to give generously
What happens when we give generously???
- Needs are met
- We become more free
- Others are pointed toward Jesus
- Love becomes visible and tangible
- It shows God that I trust Him
- It connects my money to a Kingdom purpose (helps people See Believe and Become who God created them to be)
- It breaks greed and self reliance off my heart
- It transforms my money into a seed that grows into something I could never grow on my own
- It gives my job eternal significance
- It reminds me that I am not my source
- It provides for Gods church- for this church
- It creates margin in my life for God to fill
