Self-care, really? Who has the time?

Self-care can be described as being mindful of your own limits and needs so that you can ensure your own physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spiritsoul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.

Does Self-care matter?

Matthew 22:37

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

What does it look like?

Mark 4:35-41

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

HE KNEW TO KEEP A COMMUNITY AROUND HIM!

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.

HE KNEW WHEN HE NEEDED TO REST!

37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.

HE KNEW STORMS ARE TEMPORARY!

38b The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

HE KNEW WHERE TO PLACE HIS TRUST!

40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

IF YOU DON’T LEARN TO COME APART, YOU WILL EVENTUALLY COME APART!

BIBLICAL SELF-CARE

Finds rest in Jesus.

Goal is worship & submission to God.

Is an act of stewardship.

Power for healing comes from Christ.

Sustains us-a well that never runs dry.

WORLDLY SELF-CARE

Finds rest independent of Jesus.

Goal is comfort & pleasure.

Is rooted in self-indulgence, vanity & pride.

Power for healing lies within.

Will never truly satisfy & fulfill.

2 Corinthians 12:8-9

Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

SELF-CARE BEGINS AND ENDS WITH THE ONE WHO CARES MORE ABOUT US THEN WE DO!
